And that is the reality.
On average, ankle injuries affect about 26% of NBA players and account for a large share of the reasons for missing NBA games. Ankle injuries plagued Stephen Curry early in his career and led to two different surgeries. Stephen Curry was able to turn his career around when he started wearing Zamst ankle braces and began exercises that focused on strengthening the hips and the body. This allowed him to forget about his ankle problems and move forward with his sporting career.

Another example is Trae Young, who in four years has only had minor injuries in his career. Nevertheless, he wears the same Zamst ankle braces as Stephen Curry. Why? For Trae, the goal is preventing serious injuries. Trae has had a few minor ankle injuries that would have been more serious had he not been wearing braces. Thanks to the braces, he was only out of games for short periods. Trae knows he wants to play in the NBA for a long time, and one way to do that is to reduce the risk of injury.

The five biggest benefits of using an ankle brace:

Reduces ankle injuries

Reduces the severity of injury

Reduces your time away from competition

Does not restrict your mobility

Offers players protection after an ankle injury

What does this mean for you?
According to a 2019 study that compared the use of different ankle braces and compared them with players not using braces, three different types of braces were found to reduce excessive inversion of the ankle and foot compared with athletes who did not use braces.
Reducing the likelihood of ankle injuries can be an important game-changing factor in basketball. How many times have you jumped up to shoot and landed on someone’s foot? Or tried to grab a rebound and start an attack, but ended up on the bench instead because of a twisted ankle? These are all situations that can be significantly reduced with an ankle brace. Zamst ankle braces not only offer protection, but also let you be confident in every move you make on the court.

Injuries still happen, but in terms of severity it can make a difference whether a player is out of the game for a couple of days or out for several weeks or even several months. Avoiding an injury or getting a milder injury is a big advantage that using an ankle brace offers, especially considering how common ankle injuries are in basketball. In March 2022, Trae Young injured his ankle against the Boston Celtics in the first quarter. With great effort he was able to finish the game because he was wearing a Zamst ankle brace. It looked like a serious ankle injury, but Trae Young was able to come back and play with minimal recovery.

Ankle braces have been proven to reduce ankle injuries compared with basketball players who do not use them. So why don’t more basketball players use ankle braces? That is a great question! Young athletes are often unaware of the benefits of using ankle braces. This is because they have not been taught to use braces at a young age.
There is a general belief that using ankle braces limits your skill level, but this is very far from reality, considering that Stephen Curry has won several MVP awards and championships while using ankle braces preventively, not for recovering from injuries.

“I can’t be as fast on the court with ankle braces as without them.”
Typical thinking of a young basketball player.
Basketball players often feel that fewer restrictions mean greater mobility on the court. Most players believe that wearing an ankle brace would make them feel restricted and that they would not be fast with it. Stephen Curry and Trae Young are both among the fastest guards in the NBA and they both wear Zamst ankle braces. For young athletes, it is above all important to know what options they have to reduce injuries and the severity of ankle injuries. that is what matters, not the fear that maybe I won’t be fast enough.

If an athlete has injured their ankle, how can they get back on the court quickly and start playing effectively? Recovering from an injury can be very difficult for an athlete, especially if they have been out for a long time and need to regain their feel for the game quickly. If you have injured your ankle, the ligaments remain unstable for a long time due to the sprain, and playing is difficult. And re-injuring an ankle that has just been injured is especially dangerous.
Hence the clear reason and need to wear an ankle brace after an injury, thereby reducing the risk of a new ankle injury. This can help players feel more confident and “ready to play” when returning to the game.

To play basketball at a high level, the body has to withstand certain movements that can injure your ankles. Adding extra PROTECTION reduces ankle injuries, reduces the severity of injury and increases your value to the team. Players like Stephen Curry and Trae Young have used Zamst ankle braces and have not lost their mobility. They are among the fastest runners and highest scorers in the NBA. In other words, the belief that braces restrict movement is clearly wrong and misleading.

For more information,
WHY TRAE YOUNG USES THE ZAMST A2-DX

and about the full range of Zamst ankle braces.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR EVAN JEFFRIES is a physiotherapist with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.
